When Summer Stops Being Just Summer

Across Europe, temperatures are climbing again, and it’s not only the weather charts that are spiking; it’s operational costs, productivity dips, and the general strain on teams. Extreme heat has quietly become a structural factor in how companies operate. Recent studies continue to underline the trend: days above 30 °C consistently reduce daily revenue and operating profit, and prolonged heat spells shave off annual productivity in ways that compound over time.

For startups, the impact is sharper. Smaller teams, tighter resources, improvised offices, distributed operations, every extra degree adds friction. Momentum fades, decision‑making slows, and execution suffers. And there’s that familiar paradox: many of the founders most exposed to the problem are the ones building solutions for it.

But this is where summer stops being just a risk and becomes a market signal. Demand for climate‑monitoring tools, smart infrastructure, energy efficiency systems, resilient agriculture, and adaptive work environments is rising faster than supply. Heat isn’t only a warning, it’s a roadmap. Founders building at the intersection of technology and climate adaptation are finding real traction.

Portugal is quietly positioning itself in this space. Our climate‑tech scene is more diverse, more technical, and more ambitious: renewable energy, storage, EV infrastructure, circularity, biotech, precision agriculture, ocean tech. Companies like Windcredible, Bandora, MicroHarvest, Wisecrop, Powerdot, Cleanwatts, Raiz Vertical, Inductiva, Seedsight, AddVolt, Manie, humiverso, Kencko, Oceano Fresco, Wisecrop, YData and PFX Biotech show that we’re not just reacting.

And as the climate heats up, the calendar does too. July arrives with a strong lineup of events, talks, gatherings, and chances to breathe the ecosystem; before heading off to a beach, a shady garden, or a café with reliable A/C and a cold drink. Summer is no longer just a season; it’s a stress test for teams, an accelerator for innovation, and, for those reading the signals, a clear opportunity to build where the world needs it most.

• Finding relevant startup programs, grants, pilot opportunities, events can be time-consuming. Not anymore, Build Up Labs built the Founder Opportunities search tool. • A new platform for Europe’s startup ecosystem. ESNA launched OpportunityHub.eu, a digital gateway connecting talent, founders and investors with opportunities across Europe.

• Tech Foundry Portugal -new deadline- July 10.

• Tourism Advance is an open innovation program that connects startups with companies in the hospitality sector seeking solutions to address real business challenges. Applications open until Aug 23.

• Applications for BIP PROOF are now open. The program supporting proof‑of‑concept projects across the University of Porto’s research and innovation ecosystem will award €10,000 to each selected project. Applications are open until Aug 3rd.
