Last year, I highlighted how Portuguese startups continue to prove the countryās ability to turn bold ideas into real, impactful solutions and how that momentum is setting a global standard for innovation. I also noted how investors are paying closer attention to Portugal, drawn by our strategic location, strong talent pool, and increasingly proābusiness environment. And of course, EU funding remains a true gameāchanger, helping startups scale faster and compete globally.
Now, 2026 opens with an interesting duality in our ecosystem: weāre more mature than ever, yet still strangely hesitant to call ourselves mature. Over the past decade, weāve built talent pipelines, accelerators, funds, and communities that simply didnāt exist before. Weāve demonstrated that we can build global companies from Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra; you name it. And still, we often talk about ourselves as if weāre āalmost thereā.
This year, itās time to drop the āalmostā.
Founders entering 2026 face a landscape thatās tougher, sharper, and more exciting than anything weāve seen. Capital is cautious but available. Talent is abundant but more selective. AI is rewriting every playbook. And the founders who win will be the ones who stop waiting for permission and start building with urgency. This will be an unforgiving year for those relying on wishful thinking and an incredibly generous one for those relying on work.
What should founders expect?
⢠Fundraising will be possible but only for the prepared. Investors want evidence, not adjectives.
⢠AI will widen the gap between fast teams and slow ones. Those who adopt AI early will outpace those who āwait to seeā.
⢠Talent will follow clarity. People want to join missions, not experiments.
⢠Regulation will matter more than ever. Especially in health, fintech, and AI, ignoring it will be costly.
⢠The more you give, the more you get back. Founders who mentor, share, and collaborate will see it come back tenfold.
In 2026, we can expect more venture capital and private equity firms strengthening their presence in Portugal. As more capital flows into startups, weāll likely see more success stories, more companies going global, more meaningful exits, and more founders proving whatās possible from here. Initiatives like Startup Portugal and Unicorn Factory Lisbon will continue to play a crucial role, offering resources, mentoring, and visibility that push Portuguese startups onto the world stage.
And as always, community remains one of our greatest assets. Organizations like the 351 Portuguese Startup Association, Startup Grind, and the Founder Institute Portugal continue to shape the ecosystem by supporting founders at every stage. Events such as Web Summit, Startup Week Guimarães, Portugal Tech Week, Techstars Weekend, Algarve Summit, and SIM Conference keep creating spaces for founders to connect, learn, and showcase their work.
But itās not just the big stages that matter. The ecosystem also thrives thanks to the communities that support the builders behind the scenes from LisboaJS to LisboaUX, and the many groups that meet every month to share knowledge, solve problems, and push each other forward. These grassroots communities are often where the real innovation culture is forged.
Our goal for 2026 is to keep you updated with the all relevant information regarding the Portuguese Startup ecosystem.
I wish you all the success to achieve your personal and Startup business goals.
Enjoy, and all the best for 2026!
