Asking the Right Question
What will people do when machines can do almost everything?
It’s the question that keeps many of us(at least me…) awake at night, not just as entrepreneurs or policymakers, but as parents, teammates, and citizens trying to make sense of what’s coming next.
Artificial intelligence and robotics are transforming work faster than any industrial revolution before. Cars are learning to drive themselves. Humanoid Robots are stepping into hospitals and factories. Algorithms are now writing, designing, and creating products that once depended entirely on human imagination.
So the real question isn’t whether this will change jobs(it will), it’s how smaller regions like ours can adapt, respond, and build new ones.
For the Algarve, and for Portugal as a whole, this is about more than economics. It’s about purpose, courage, and identity. How does a region known for its beauty and hospitality turn that same creativity into innovation? How can we keep our brightest minds here, attract new ones, and build a future that goes beyond seasonal work?
No one has all the answers. What matters now is starting the right conversation… openly, collaboratively, and with the humility to learn together.
The Coming Disruption
The scale of what’s unfolding is hard to grasp. Over the next decade, millions of roles will shift. Some will disappear. Others, entirely new ones, will take their place.
Even jobs once seen as “future-proof” are being redefined. Take software development. For years it was the safest career path imaginable. But today, entry-level coders are struggling to keep pace with AI-augmented senior engineers who can deliver in days what once took teams weeks.
This isn’t a collapse. It’s a shift. And if it’s happening in one of the most complex, cognitive fields, it will spread quickly to every other.
At the same time, new types of work are emerging, jobs that mix human judgment, creativity, and systems thinking with machine intelligence.

These new professionals don’t build interfaces. They design interactions, curating conversations between humans and intelligent systems, guiding AI behavior, and orchestrating networks of digital agents that can act and think alongside us.
And these skills aren’t being taught in traditional classrooms. They’re being learned by doing, through R&D, experimentation, and creative play.
That’s the lesson for regions like ours: those who experiment first, discover the new jobs first.
Why the Algarve Must Act, and 5 suggestions for the future
The Algarve lives in a unique balance between privilege and pressure. We have incredible quality of life, access to international talent, and a solid university network. Yet many of our most talented young people still leave.
AI and robotics can either make that problem worse or help us turn it around. If we wait, our seasonal jobs will slowly be automated and managed from elsewhere. But if we move now, we can create new industries rooted in our creativity, empathy, and technical skill.
The Algarve doesn’t need to compete on size. We can compete on agility. On collaboration. On the power of being a living lab, a place where tourism, technology, science, and education meet to explore how humans and machines can work better together.
This transformation has already begun. The Algarve Tech Hub is bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers, and public and private partners around a shared mission: to make the region a magnet for innovation and a birthplace of meaningful jobs for future generations.
And, as Adamastor.blog reminds us, Portugal’s journey has always involved facing our own fears, and turning them into fuel for discovery. The mythic Adamastor once symbolized the great unknown that Portuguese navigators feared beyond the Cape of Storms. But it was only through science, specialization, and courage that we found a way around it and reached new worlds.
Today, our “Adamastor” isn’t the ocean… It’s the challenge of building a more diverse economy with innovative companies and future-ready jobs. The challenge is the same: to look at the storm, not with fear, but with focus and innovation. The future will belong to those who, dare to learn fast, work together, and keep sailing forward.
1 - The Algarve Innovation Lab: Learning by Building
To prepare people for these new jobs, education and industry must move closer together.
The Algarve Innovation Lab is a framework to make that happen. It’s not a new school or building. It’s a shared platform that aligns the University of the Algarve, technical schools, private academies, and companies around one mission: learning by building.
Students and researchers work directly with businesses on real-world challenges, designing a marine robot, building an AI hospitality system, or developing predictive health tools.
This turns education into co-creation and classrooms into living labs, where research, business, and innovation meet in practice, not just in theory.
This approach must start early. We need to bring STEAM(E) education (science, tech, engineering, arts, math and ENTREPRENEURSHIP) into public schools so that creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork become second nature.
Alongside this, venture studios can play a key role — acting as turnkey company builders that transform ideas and research into startups ready to scale. This model, now being promoted through Studios.pt, gives structure and speed to innovation, turning learning into ventures and ventures into real jobs for the region. Studios.pt will officially launch soon, aiming to support regional innovation through this structured approach.
And we need to change the cultural mindset: in Portugal/Europe, creating new companies must be seen as something exciting and respected. Without that, we’ll never grow the next generation of bold innovators.
To create future jobs, education and industry must work as one.

2 - The Knowledge Layer: Building the Foundation
Every sector, tourism, health, the ocean economy, depends on one thing: knowledge.
The Algarve needs a Knowledge Layer: a connected network of developers, researchers, and experts in AI, data, and robotics who support all sectors. It’s not another institution, it’s a shared capability that links universities, private labs, and entrepreneurs to apply advanced technology locally.
In the short term, we’ll attract remote workers, digital nomads, and global experts already living here , connected to the region and new ones. Through the Algarve Evolution network, many are already collaborating to bring world-class experience/investment into local projects.
In the long term, the Algarve Innovation Lab will train a new generation of experts locally, turning this knowledge layer into a self-sustaining ecosystem of talent and innovation.
Small regions don’t win by scale. They win by connection, collaboration, and trust.

3 - Hospitality 2050: Reinventing Our Core Industry
Tourism will always be the heart of the Algarve, but it can also be our testbed for innovation.
Imagine hotels where humanoid robots manage check-ins, deliveries, and maintenance while human hosts focus on storytelling, empathy, and local culture. Picture AI omni-channel concierges that anticipate guests’ needs before they arrive, guided by creative professionals who design experiences with intention and care.
These aren’t distant ideas. They’re the next generation of roles:
Customer experience designers
AI hospitality managers
Data experience curators
Robotic operations leads
A Smart Hospitality Network could unite hotels, universities, and startups to test and refine these ideas.
This isn’t about replacing people. It’s about creating better jobs, ones that celebrate what humans do best: connect, create, and care.

4 - Health Tech: Aging, Care, and Collaboration
Portugal’s aging population is one of its greatest challenges, but also one of its biggest opportunities.
AI can already detect diseases early, manage chronic conditions remotely, and support doctors in diagnosis. But technology alone isn’t enough. Care will always need empathy. Machines can assist, but they can’t comfort.
The Algarve is perfectly positioned to pioneer AI-assisted care models, training health professionals to use these tools responsibly and effectively. With the new central hospital and medical university as anchors, we could develop pilot programs in telehealth, rehabilitation robotics, and predictive medicine.
A Health Innovation Program, connecting hospitals, research teams, and startups, would not only improve quality of care, it would create high-value jobs and a stronger local ecosystem.

5 - Blue Economy: From Fishermen to Ocean Technologists
The sea has always defined the Algarve. Now it can define our next chapter.
Marine robotics, sustainable aquaculture, and ocean data are emerging as billion-euro industries. The Algarve has the geography, talent, and research base to lead them.
Imagine fleets of autonomous vessels monitoring ocean health or maintaining offshore energy platforms. Behind them are teams of marine robotics engineers, ocean data scientists, and AI sustainability analysts.
This is where tradition meets technology, where fishermen work side by side with data experts to protect livelihoods and ecosystems at the same time.
